Some of these resources are right here on GarfNet. The rest are dotted around the worldwide web. I thought it would be useful to have links to them here, all in one place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Working online&#8230;<\/h2>\n<h3>Maps<\/h3>\n<h4>OpenStreetMap<\/h4>\n<p>A useful free alternative to both Google and Ordnance Survey is provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/openstreetmap.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenStreetMap<\/a> project:-&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/openstreetmap.org\">https:\/\/openstreetmap.org<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenStreetMap\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenStreetMap<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OpenStreetMap started life in Britain but now covers the entire planet. It is founded on some pretty solid web-friendly logic For example the path after the URL is simply<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>https:\/\/openstreetmap.org \/#map=[<strong>zoom-level<\/strong>]\/[<strong>latitude<\/strong>]\/[<strong>longitude<\/strong>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the URL for Havant railway station would be:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/#map=19\/50.854429\/-0.981552\">https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/#map=19\/50.854429\/-0.981552<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Traffic maps<\/h4>\n<p>Traffic England, Traffic Scotland and Traffic Wales provide quite useful traffic maps with (mostly) live cameras on most of the nations&#8217; trunk roads. Unfortunately three different sites, all of which function quite differently form each other. Still, that can be helpful at times:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficengland.com\/#map-menu-live-traffic\">https:\/\/www.trafficengland.com\/#map-menu-live-traffic<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traffic.gov.scot\/\">https:\/\/www.traffic.gov.scot\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/traffic.wales\/road-cameras\">https:\/\/traffic.wales\/road-cameras<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Handling Ordnance Survey grid references<\/h4>\n<p>The following site converts OS grid references to a marker on an online map&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gridreferencefinder.com\">https:\/\/gridreferencefinder.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you scroll to the bottom of the page it also converts the grid reference to standard longitude &amp; latitude.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Tide timetables<\/h3>\n<p>If you are photographing a beach or tidal river, tide times can be a crucial factor. Aside from the obvious safety concerns, beaches and riversides can assume a totally different look at low tide compared to high tide. This site provides quite good up-to-date coverage for the whole of the British Isles, based upon OpenStreetMap mapping&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tidetimes.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/www.tidetimes.org.uk\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Weather<\/h3>\n<p>Some years back I wrote a weather viewer based on METAR data, c\/w <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/metar\">a recent mobile friendly update.<\/a> It still works quite well but has been massively superseded by sophisticated visual web applications such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ventusky.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ventusky<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/metar\">https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/metar<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ventusky.com\">https:\/\/ventusky.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>OpenWeatherMap<\/h4>\n<p>Then there is the excellent weather service provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/openweathermap.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenWeathermap<\/a>&nbsp;Although it is based in London, <a href=\"https:\/\/openweathermap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenWeatherMap<\/a> covers the entire planet, using a huge number of automatic localised weather monitoring stations. OpenWeatherMap also provides the data source for many desktop and mobile weather widgets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/openweathermap.org\/\">https:\/\/openweathermap.org\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenWeatherMap\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenWeatherMap<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like Openstreetmap, OpenWeatherMap&#8217;s URL&#8217;s are very web-friendly. Every station has a unique number. When you search for a station, its unique number is added to the main URL thus:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>https:\/\/openweathermap.org\/city\/<strong>[stationID]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example the station in the centre of Havant&nbsp;is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2647317<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Its URL becomes&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/openweathermap.org\/city\/2647317\">https:\/\/openweathermap.org\/city\/2647317<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Internet radio<\/h3>\n<p>These will provide direct <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/tables\/radio-frequencies\/internet-radio-player\/bbc-national-and-local-radio-dash-streams\/\">DASH<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/bbc-national-and-local-radio-hls-streams\/\">HLS<\/a> radio streams for BBC national and local radio stations. These can be handy if you want to know what the weather and traffic is doing three counties away.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/tables\/radio-frequencies\/internet-radio-player\/bbc-national-and-local-radio-dash-streams\/\">BBC DASH Streams<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/bbc-national-and-local-radio-hls-streams\/\">BBC HLS Streams<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These streams can be played directly or added as a playlist to any good media player, such as VLC. I Have also built a rudimentary player for these streams. It is a bit buggy, but it works:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/radio\">GarfNet Internet Radio Player<\/a> &#8211; this thing still needs some polish, but it works. <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/radio\">https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/radio<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Working offline too&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>These will work on-line <em>and<\/em> offline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Mapping applications<\/h3>\n<h4>OSMAND+<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/f-droid.org\/packages\/net.osmand.plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSMAND+<\/a> Excellent alternative to Google maps, based upon OpenStreetMap, using open source software, that does not give up your location to a foreign corporation in a foreign jurisdiction. Free, open source, with no hidden nasties. Maps download locally and updated monthly. Which means it works even when you don&#8217;t have a live internet connection. It also integrates nicely with your device&#8217;s GPS\/GLONASS\/Beidou sensors:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/f-droid.org\/packages\/net.osmand.plus\/\">https:\/\/f-droid.org\/packages\/net.osmand.plus\/<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s also easy to take a screengrab to use to illustrate an article or send to other members of your team. This one was for my recent photo-jaunts to the <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/2026\/03\/31\/storks-at-knepp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stork nests at Knepp<\/a>, and the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/2026\/03\/31\/kings-windmill-shipley-in-infrared\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kings Mill, smock windmill, Shipley<\/a> in West Sussex..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/gallery\/20260331-knepp\/Screenshot_20260404153518-knepp.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/gallery\/20260331-knepp\/Screenshot_20260404153518-knepp.png\" width=\"602\" height=\"1080\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>OSMAND is also available on Google Play, but the FDroid version is better because all the map downloads are free, and the source-code checked for obvious nasties.<\/p>\n<h4>SatStat<\/h4>\n<p>While you are at it, you might find <a href=\"https:\/\/f-droid.org\/packages\/com.vonglasow.michael.satstat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SatStat<\/a> handy for actually locating and managing positioning satellites.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/f-droid.org\/packages\/com.vonglasow.michael.satstat\/\">https:\/\/f-droid.org\/packages\/com.vonglasow.michael.satstat\/<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Marble<\/h4>\n<p>If you use Debian GNU\/Linux, or one of its derivatives (such as Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint, KDE Neon et al) then you mght find KDE Marble a useful addition to your mapping arsenal. This is a desktop application. However it is possible to import and export data to\/from Marble and OSMAnd+. To install Marble on Debian-based systems:-<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install marble<\/pre>\n<p>There are also versions for Android and MS Windows. You might also wish to refer to the KDE Marble official site and its corresponding Wikipedia page:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/marble.kde.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/marble.kde.org\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marble_%28software%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marble_%28software%29<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A few other free applets that I find handy while I&#8217;m on the road. YMMV&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>These free responsive tools work quite well on both desktop and mobile devices. No installation required. If you don&#8217;t have roaming data on your phone, these applets will also work off line. Simply load into a separate tab in your browser before you leave the house. Just <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> close the tab while you are away from the internet! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/dof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Depth of field calculator<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; for most popular lenses and cameras.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/dof\">https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/dof<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/calc\">Scientific calculator<\/a> &#8211; useful if say you wish to calculate height of a building or similar using h = d.tan\u0398 or similar: <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/calc\">https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/calc<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/converter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Units converter<\/a> &#8211; handy if you live in a country such as the UK, where metrication is <em>still<\/em> not complete and is unlikely to be any time soon: <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/converter\">https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/converter<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HTH \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I thought it might be handy to make a small collection of web-based resources for outdoor photography and similar activities.
