It&#8217;s worked pretty well too. In fact, my wife and I <em>really<\/em> like our system. She shares certain cams with her folks back in Hungary. And my mum often checks our garden cam from her flat in Southampton, just to see what the weather is doing here! We watch baby foxes playing in the street and hedgehogs shagging on the steps of my shed. We also caught next door&#8217;s cat taking a dump in our porch lol ! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Even more interesting, I&#8217;m finding my customers are having quite a lot of fun with with their Zoneminder systems too. Seems they share streams of their garden with friends in Canada etc. One guy actually asks me to log in to his cams while he&#8217;s on holiday, just to keep an extra eye on the place. As an aside, I&#8217;ve actually taken some moderately good still photos too using our newer, better-quality security cams, Though I&#8217;d be the first to admit the old legacy cams are pretty poor!<\/p>\n<p>Problem with our current systems is that PC&#8217;s are big, noisy (unless you spend a lot of money) and they consume quite a lot of energy. Which made me wonder if I could use the latest diminutive Raspberry \u03c04 to improve my Zoneminder systems, both in terms of their physical footprint <em>and<\/em> their carbon footprint. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2>Here&#8217;s where I&#8217;m at right now @ 2020-11-24 23:54&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Well, I ordered my \u03c04 &#8211; the 8GB version c\/w that rather nice FLIRC case that a friend recommended, both from the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepihut.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pi-Hut<\/a>. According to Royal Mail, it&#8217;s currently at Southampton main sorting office, due out for delivery tomorrow morning!<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/flirc-case-Inside.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/flirc-case-Inside.jpg\" alt=\"Library photo of FLIRC case\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Library photo of FLIRC case<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7208\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7208\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pi-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pi-4.jpg\" alt=\"Library photo of Raspberry Pi 4\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7208\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Library photo of Raspberry Pi 4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meantime, I popped into a very well <em>socially-distanced<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novatech.co.uk\/products\/intel-665p-1tb-nvme-m-2-ssd\/ssdpeknw010t9x1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Novatech<\/a> and splashed out the princely sum of \u00a396.98 for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/products\/memory-storage\/solid-state-drives\/consumer-ssds\/6-series\/ssd-665p-series\/665p-series-1-tb-m-2-80mm-3d3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1024GB Intel 665p NVMe m.2 SSD<\/a>. I&#8217;m still not sure about &#8220;quad-level&#8221; SSD. But they have had great reviews. I also calculate that whilst I will be rewriting almost the entire disk quite regularly, I will only be doing so very gradually. The rewrite cycle should last well over a month. That should give me at least 200 months before the SSD cells become flaky. By which time, I suspect that both the SSD and the \u03c04 will have been replaced! Which meant I could test it with my laptop before the \u03c04 arrives. I&#8217;m pleased to report that it goes like the absolute clappers &#8211; way faster than any SD card. I also downloaded Ubuntu server 20.04.1 LTS for ARM64 and installed it on the Intel NVMe SSD, using the excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/blog\/raspberry-pi-imager-imaging-utility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rpi-imager<\/a> for Ubuntu. This seems to work a treat too. Also prepared a 128GB micro-SD so I can initially boot and alter the \u03c04&#8217;s boot sequence. And I checked that Zoneminder developer Isaac Connor actually maintains an <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~iconnor\/+archive\/ubuntu\/zoneminder-1.34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ARM64 PPA<\/a> for his regularly updated version of Zoneminder &#8211; which is significantly better then the version in the Ubuntu repos. So I won&#8217;t have any messy compiling to do on a regular basis &#8211; I hope! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7214\" style=\"width: 1477px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ssk-case-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ssk-case-2.jpg\" alt=\"More advertising puff for SSK aluminium NVMe SSD enclosure\" width=\"1477\" height=\"1304\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More advertising puff for SSK aluminium NVMe SSD enclosure<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also ordered a couple of these generic unbranded &#8220;buck&#8221; voltage converter modules to safely drop the 12VDC from my security system switch mode PSU down to 5 volts @ 5 amps max &#8211; though they won&#8217;t arrive until the weekend. Fortunately I have shedloads of other suitable PSU&#8217;s I can use while I am configuring and testing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7213\" style=\"width: 1001px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/usb-psu-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/usb-psu-1.jpg\" alt=\"12 volt to 5 volt buck voltage step-down adaptor with 4 USB a outputs\" width=\"1001\" height=\"1001\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">12 volt to 5 volt buck voltage step-down adaptor with 4 USB a outputs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well that&#8217;s it for now.
