Activity in the upper atmosphere of the sun, known as the &#8216;corona&#8217;, creates huge &#8216;solar flares&#8217;. These generate powerful streams of charged particles known as &#8216;solar winds&#8217;, capable of travelling vast distances through the voids of space.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Direct Hit! A snake-like filament launched as a big <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/solarstorm?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#solarstorm<\/a> while in the Earth-strike zone. NASA predicts impact early July 19. Strong <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/aurora?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#aurora<\/a> shows possible with this one, deep into mid-latitudes. Amateur <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/radio?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#radio<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GPS?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GPS<\/a> users expect signal disruptions on Earth&#39;s nightside. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7FHgS63xiU\">pic.twitter.com\/7FHgS63xiU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Tamitha Skov (@TamithaSkov) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TamithaSkov\/status\/1548380370038444034?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Whist not as fast as light (~300,000 km\/s), solar winds move much faster than sound (~0.343 km\/s), anywhere between 250 and 750 kilometres per second. One such solar storm is expected to hit Earth sometime on 2022-09-19.<\/p>\n<p>The extent to which Earth will be affected by this particular storm is still unknown. But powerful storms can affect telecommunications such as radio, IT systems and can affect global positioning satellite (GPS) and power grids. A recent article in The Independent also suggests it <em>could<\/em> disrupt safety systems such as <a class=\"external\" title=\"This link will open in a new window or tab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/solar-storm-weather-flare-sun-train-delays-crash-b2123338.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">railway signalling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s thought the most visible effect of this storm will be unusually strong aurora activity, expected well into mid latitudes. Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis (AKA Northern and Southern Lights) are likely to seen much further from the planet&#8217;s poles than usual, as these powerful streams of charged particles interact with Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Data loss is unlikely this time. However, I am making an extra backup which I intend to disconnect from its power source and place in a grounded steel cabinet, just in case. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/superuser.com\/questions\/1014071\/how-to-protect-my-digital-data-from-solar-flares#1014178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/superuser.com\/questions\/1014071\/how-to-protect-my-digital-data-from-solar-flares#1014178<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Nothing to do with the weather here on Earth<\/h2>\n<p>To be quite clear. This is a solar wind <strong>NOT<\/strong> an air wind. Solar winds are streams of<em> charged particles<\/em> that strike our planet typically travelling around 300,000 metres per second &#8211; around 1\/1000 the speed of light. Not to be confused with the sort of winds we get on a windy day &#8211; streams of <em>air<\/em>, typically travelling between around <a href=\"https:\/\/garfnet.org.uk\/cms\/tables\/general\/wind-speeds\/\">1-30 metres per second<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The effect of a <em>solar<\/em> wind is the Aurorae Borealis and Australis, together with effects on electrical and telecommunications systems.
