It was a bright spring day and I found myself round the back of Bournemouth Airport, taking pictures of indoor go-cart racing event for a client. Some of those pictures are still on line at the bottom of: http://www.wessex.org.uk/dental/vt/info/events.htm. Anyway, as I navigated my way along the cracked roads & bits of redundant runway, I spotted lots of huge passenger aircraft with bits hanging off them. Suddenly there was a deafening roar. It was coming from a plane on the ground with its wheels chocked. It appeared to have its jet engine attached to what seemed like some sort of test rig. I don't think I was really supposed to be there but I just had to get a few pictures...

One day, my old buddy Mr Goose & I were wandering through France, when we met a gaggle of very friendly French geese. They stood around and honked and squawked and posed for the camera. I only speak a little French & Mr G. dislikes the French intensely. No offence to French people because Mr G doesn't like anybody very much. But he was very excited to meet the French geese especially as he was able to talk to them in International Goose Language rather than French. Unfortunately Mr G would not share his dinner with them so they all buggered off pretty soon, honking and hissing in disgust. Nevertheless, here are a few snaps of the French geese, doing their goosy thing...

I found myself in Portsmouth one sunny afternoon, taking my new MGF in for yet more warranty repairs. Fortunately, I got rid of the wretched thing now! Anyway, back to the plot: to make a virtue of necessity, I decided to make a small detour and take some pix of the aging Tricorn Centre. Hailed at the time as 'the future of British shopping' it's an enormous, late 60's concrete structure in the middle of town. Everyone seems to worry about getting old but I can remember when they built the thing. I understand that it won awards at the time but now its derelict - the city authorities not sure whether to pull it down or make it a 'listed building'. 'Group hugs' all round no doubt!
Anyway, whilst snapping away at this deserted, peculiarly English genre of inner city decay, I caught sight of roughly four horizontal metres of sprayed lettering that read 'SAVE DA TRICON CENTA INNIT'. Seems it's not just nerdy architect types banging on about how the concrete work is in the style of Corbusier that want to save this quirky piece of modern English history. It's a slightly scary place full of strange architectural features and even more strange graffiti. This makes it a very addictive environment for a died-in-the wool photo-junkie such as me.
Eventually, after nearly two hours of ignoring the misspelt 'Keep Out' signs, a grossly overweight old duffer in a security guard's uniform oozed out of a shagged-out Ford and politely asked me to leave. I obliged - scuttling back to my illegally parked courtesy car with 300 high-rez pix already 'on the chip'.
Weird thing to admit but I like these pictures of urban decay. Nevertheless, I guess that the Tricorn will not be saved and that soon demolition will commence in order to make way for something even more ghastly but much less photogenic.

I think this must be one of the most fascinating places I have ever visited. I originally saw it back in 1991, when I drove across Europe with a designer chum & Millennium contributor Rob Weller. I revisited it in the summer of 2001 armed with a new digital SLR. Designed by Le Corbusier, this non denominational church was built after the second world war as a symbol of peace.

Mazda MX5
Virtual album of Mazda MX5 pictures. The humble MX5 has an interesting place in motoring history. Its design was based very heavily on a 1960's Lotus Elan. Apparently it came about from a conversation that took place in the mid 1970s between a UK Journalist called Bob Hall & Kenichi Yamamoto, head of Research and Development at Mazda, Japan. Thirteen years later, the result was a British style sports car with Japanese build quality.

2017-07-28 Nematodes Microscopy
Earlier this year, She That Must Be Obeyed had me plant six rather expensive Portuguese Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) trees at the end of our garden. At first they did very well - grew about 20cm in two months. But now some of the leaves are showing signs of what appears to be Vine Weevil. The adults are bad enough but they only eat the leaves. Their grubs, are much more destructive and spend much of the late summer and autumn devouring the roots. There are various pesticides available - but I have a fundamental aversion to using such things. An alternative solution is to use nematodes. Now, there are various types of nematode but the type we are interested in are called "Steinernema Kraussei".
From my albeit limited research, it seems these are entomopathogenic (insect killing) nematodes - tiny, soft bodied, non-segmented roundworms around 700µm to 1400µm long. Apparently they attack the weevil grubs via the oral and anal cavities, devouring them from the inside. Then they multiply and go looking for other grubs to eat for their dinner.

2015-03-27 Toytown (Portsmouth from Portsdown Hill)
These two images were taken from Portsdown Hill, in south east Hampshire. It is the most westerly edge of the South Downs and it raises us some 120 metres above Portsmouth and the surrounding coastal plain. We're looking south. The houses in the foreground are around 300 - 500 metres away. The concrete building (which was the old IBM building) is about 1km away.
Without the tilting/adaptor, the lens would be focussed at infinity, and all you see in the pictures below would have been in focus. However, in these two images, the lens is tilted roughly 8° to the camera's focal plane. Thus the bottom of the lens is closer to the sensor than the top. Which means that one can determine which part of the image is in focus, simply by varying the focus ring on the lens. It gives images these images a strange "Toytown" or "Thunderbirds" sort of look. I've had rather a lot of fun with this actually. :-)
My set-up is an elderly manual-focus, East Bloc, Helios 44M-4 58mm f/2.0 prime, c/w generic Chinese M42->µ4/3 tilting adaptor, on a Lumix DMC GX7 (a micro four/thirds MILC). Lens and tilting/adaptor set me back a bit under thirty quid, if my memory serves me correctly.
