My Huldra 500mL tankard
Regular readers will know I’m quite a Tandberg fan – especially arguably Vebjørn Tandberg’s greatest works, the Huldra series. Well Tandberg commissioned pewter maker Haugrud to produce several commemorative pewter products to celebrate its products. I’ve had a set of the 50mL whisky tots for years. My late father was given them when he ran a chain of Hi-fi Shops and managed to sell three Hulda 10’s. At the time, a Huldra 10 cost about 1/3 the cost of a brand new Ford Cortina Mk3 1600E.
Luckily I also have a Huldra 10 I rebuilt a decade or so ago (pictured in the “gallery” section below). It’s a lovely bit of kit. Anyway, seems the tots where not the only thing Haugrud made celebrating the Huldra. It also made a very stylish Huldra 500mL beer tankard. Now I’m not a great fan of pewter for drinking beer. I generally prefer glass or decent stainless steel. But I made an exception for this thing:-

I stumbled upon it in eBay – seller was a very nice guy as it happens. i was so taken with it I decided i just had to have it. And of course I had to test it with a good selection of beers. More of pictures of which will follow…

That’s a beauty, I’d have been tempted myself.
Haugrud pewter always has that chunky Scandinavian well-engineered look. Much as the early 70’s Tandberg hi-fi stuff did. In this instance, the vessel holds 0.5dm³ to within 10mm of the top, upper meniscus, @ 20°C. I wouldn’t be surprised if Vebjørn himself put that in the spec. Yeah, I measured it! 🙂
