I absolutely love my work. Trading as “Garf Technology Multimedia”, my business card reads: “Freelance IT Consultant, Journalist & Photographer” but in reality my work has lead me in many fascinating directions including teaching, writing, taking loads of pictures, plus plenty of what I loosely describe as ‘research’.
I have always rather enjoyed plugging test equipment into a PC and capturing the readings. Way back in my early days of using GNU/Linux I had a lot of fun with a program called QtDMM. I still have my old ÂŁ15 bargain-bin Tenma 72-6870 which worked almost flawlessly with QtDMM on Ubuntu, back in 2008….
I just had quite a busy couple of weeks updating all the tables in our “Reference Tables” section. This is the part of the site where we put all the boring but occasionally useful stuff, such as battery sizes, radio frequencies, internet radio streams and an assortment of other tabulated data that comes in handy…
Well, there goes another year – whizzed past even faster than the last one. Not much else has changed. AI is still over-hyped and yet remarkably lacking in any actual intelligence. Donald Trump is still alive. Still, on the bright side, I have another nice new toy – well a modification to an old toy,…
Skip preamble and launch Units Converter applet Another GarfNet software project snatched from the grave, this is a complete rebuild of the original GarfNet Unit Converter. The main feature of the new GarfNet converter applet is that it is bi directional. Whatever “Quantity:” box you use, the conversion will automagically appear in the other box….
Skip preamble and launch DoF calculator applet now. Welcome to the latest rework of the GarfNet Depth of Field Calculator. It is based on quite an old JavaScript application that appeared on the web back in the mid 1990s. I rewrote and extended it in the mid 2000’s. Consequently, it was looking rather old and…
Skip preamble and launch METAR applet now. This is a modern rework of a very old PHPWeather project that we eventually abandoned nearly a decade ago. I built this new version in PHP/MYSQL pretty much from scratch, albeit with a lot of help from PerplexityAI. Its main emphases are speed and simplicity. Basically it collects…
Seems as if it were only the day before yesterday, but it is in fact thirty years to the day since GarfNet had its own domain. Granted, this represents a somewhat trivial achievement on the overall scheme of things. Frankly never I actually achieved all the things I hoped I would with GarfNet. Like it…
Wishing you a very merry peaceful Christmas, followed by a happy, successful New Year. Creating this year’s card This year we wanted to do something a little different. So we decided to deploy Stable Diffusion open source artificial intelligence to generate the main image. Unfortunately AI is not good at drawing signs. So that was…
Merry Christmas 2023 from GarfNet, in a cold, damp, wet and windy Old Blighty. Like last year, its all a tad dull and gloomy here and many folks here are not exactly brimming with festive cheer, this year. Nevertheless, merry Christmas anyway… 🙂 About the picture The photo is entitled “The easily LED geese of…
Merry Christmas 2022 from Garfnet, in a cold, damp, gloomy, strike-riddled, post-Brexit Britain. Seems we really are going back to the seventies this year. This is a Winter of Discontent that rivals that of 1978-79. In fact, there are so many strikes happening here at the moment that the Guardian newspaper has published a regularly…
We’re busy replacing a customer’s ageing Sonos distributed sound system with a Linux Media Server (c/w SAMBA for remaining Sonos kit) c/w these tiny Linux-powered SBCs (single board commuters) as replacements. Granted, this is merely a prototype. This unit is based upon a Raspberry pi 4B c/w 8GiB RAM, a capacitive touchscreen and an external…
Coronavirus is still a big thing and the latest variant codenamed “omicron” is particularly infectious is causing clinicians great concern because of its rapid spread. We just managed to avoid another Christmas lock-down here in the UK. But another one is expected soon. So it seems Mr Goose may be stuck with loads more DIY…
Seems we had to put up with Donald Trump, Brexit and Coronavirus all in one year! Here in Havant on the south coast of England, we are now in what our Government describes as a coronavirus Tier 4 area. Personally I don’t mind staying at home. I have enough food, half a bottle of decent-is…
Where’s Boris? By Zsuzsanna Dora Majlati
These splendid-looking geese are residents at the Weald and Down Open Air Museum, West Sussex, England.
Geese lament over Brexit and Trump. Painted by Zusannah Dora Majlati, 2016.
“Oh no it isn’t!” A little goosy Yuletide humour. Mr Goose objects to his fellow geese being eaten for Christmas.
The Goose that Never Voted for Christmas Lovingly drawn by Zsuzsanna Dora Majlati Well, it’s been a funny old year. Lots of hard work going on behind the scenes, but not a great deal to show publicly for all the effort. The new Joomla site is still in progress – struggling to use our existing…
Christmas card 2013. Ebenezer Goose at St Faith’s, Havant. In 935AD, Havant was known as “Hamafunta” – the spring of Hama – referring to the water spring to the south-west of St Faith’s Churchyard. The settlement was located at the crossing point of the track from the Downs to the coast and another track running…

Christmas card 2010, “The Old Cemetery in the Snow.” The Old Cemetery runs alongside Southampton Common, about 800 metres from where I live and work. It is a beautiful and peaceful place at any time of year. However, it seems particularly photogenic after a heavy snowfall. The Shabby Trabi. Garf Technology Christmas card 2008.
Just spent a very cold and snowy New Years Eve in PĂ©cs, Hungary.
Wishing all our readers a very merry, peaceful Christmas And a happy, successful New Year… “Mr. Penguin and Mr. Goose, on a very frosty Hungarian day.”
Garf Technology is something of a ‘lifestyle business‘. This is where one is more concerned with doing things ‘well‘ & enjoying it, rather than trying to make a ‘fast buck‘. Or as a more sceptical observer might put it: somehow I manage to get paid to do my various hobbies! I love it! Sometimes I…

Garf Technology rests on Christmas Day. Actually, it hardly ever does but it was a nice thought anyway.
Chief engineer’s Christmas wishlist. Original by my maternal grandfather, AR Bunday.
The very first Garf Technology Christmas card, 1988 Hardly the prettiest card ever made, but it had a sort of simplistic purity. Well, that’s our excuse and we’re sticking to it! 🙂
Welcome to the most boring and pointless page on the Worldwide Web. Sincere apologies to Sir Tim, who would no doubt be severely disappointed… And special apologies to those who clicked the “read more…” link. There is no more.
