My broadband is so slow
If you live in the UK and you want decent speed at an affordable price, then you need to establish whether FttP (Fibre to the Premises) is available to your property yet? It’s being rolled out across the country right now. Almost 10 years later than former prime minister Tony Blair said it would. But hey, better late than never, eh! After all, we are British, and we don’t want to rush these things, now do we… 🙂
CityFibre dug our street up a bit over 18 months ago to lay fibre. Local company called “toob” (stylised with a small “t”) arranged the installation from the road to a little whited bix on the wall a metre or so below the “modem rack” in my garage. It’s installers made a commendably neat of job of it too. They were particularly careful to take up the bricks from my drive and lay them out carefully, so they would go back exactly from whence they came. I was very impressed with that.
£25/month for 900 Mbit/s symmetrical (means the nominal speed is the same regardless of whether data is going up or down the pipe). We pay an extra £8 for a static IP address primarily because customers access our servers remotely. I also rely on being able to access certain data, regardless of wherever I am. I also like to keep my systems here updated even if I am out of the country. Static IP address means I can shell in from far away and perform routine Debian upgrades and similar. For most users static IP is unnecessary.
I have several friends connected with toob who seem reasonably happy with the service. I have several customers we set up with Zen. They generally speak well of its service too.
FWIW, going “full fibre” has pretty much revolutionised how we do business. I can now undertake huge backups and upgrades across the internet almost as fast as those on our own LAN. Also, because I was able to dump our BT landline and repurpose the BT number to VOIP (voice over internet protocol), the whole upgrade actually saved us money. About £500 a year in fact!
